Going to college and studying for a degree is often a dream for many young people. The idea that they can go to college, live on campus, and enjoy not only the education but the social side of things is an experience you get once in a lifetime. But the true reality of college is there is a cost and this needs to be funded. While it is important to fill out the FAFSA form for financial aid, some colleges participate in the work-study program and this could be a great option for you. But what is work-study and how does it work? Let’s get into the details.

What is Work Study?

Work study is an opportunity for a student to earn money to pay for school through on and sometimes off-campus part-time work. It gives students the opportunity to not only earn to help pay for their college bills but also provides the chance to gain experience. Places are usually limited and not all schools have the program available so it is advisable to look into your specific college to see if it is an opportunity for you. If you do have the option with your school, applying early is crucial to avoid disappointment.

How does it work?

You simply apply for work study with your college, usually when you apply for financial aid. If you are successful, you will be awarded work-study funds. However, in order to get those funds, you need to find a participating job and earn the money. This might be possible through your college or you may need to seek one yourself.

Examples of Work Study Jobs

Many of the employees that you see on campus in the computer lab or help desk are work study students. Other work-study jobs may include being a library assistant, office assistant, tour guide, marketer, tutor, fitness center assistant, art department assistant, research assistant, daycare helper, and/or mailroom assistant.

When I was in college, I worked in the ESL office for my work-study job. ESL stands for English as a Second Language. I would answer the phone, input new ESL students into the computer, and run reports. I got paid minimum wage, and if I finished my assigned work, I could work on my homework or study in between phone calls and helping walk-ins. They allowed me to work flexible hours and work until I reached the maximum work-study dollar amount I was granted. I loved the people I worked with and I must’ve done good work, as they offered me a position in that department once I graduated. I sometimes wonder if my life would be different had I taken that position.

Work Study Considerations

There are a number of factors that you need to consider when it comes to work-study and if it is an option for you. I have outlined some of them for you below:

  • You are not guaranteed a job

In some cases, a school might match you to a work-study position. But in other cases, you may need to find, apply and interview for the roles.

  • The job might not always be on campus

Some work-study positions may not be on campus. You may get the opportunity to work for non-profit organizations or charities.

  • Funds are not deducted from your college bill

Instead, a student will get a paycheck like any normal job. It is supposed to help with the day-to-day expenditure of college life and not for larger costs like housing and tuition.

  • Pay and hours may vary

Again like with any job the pay and the hours might vary depending on the positions available. There will be different positions on offer.

  • Earnings are removed from your FAFSA calculation

This can be a benefit to you as the amount earned is removed from your FAFSA calculation. You will be asked on the FAFSA from what earnings were made during the last tax year through work-study. It is important that this is accurate. If you are unsure your college office will have the answer.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this has made you more aware of what work-study is and how it works.
